Master Angler 4th Leg - Wicklow North, June 1st, Fishing 7 - 12 Midnight

Fingers crossed for some settled weather prior to this competition and we should be for a cracking evening's sport (kiss of death!). This competition has been the highpoint in the past couple of years with lot's of dogfish, nice plaice and decent whiting showing up in numbers. There's even talk of a few more big guns coming out of hibernation for it (Brock, Bootsy & John) to fire leads at Wales.

We'll also be starting our Last Man Standing Competition (€10 a man) that will run throughout our Master Angler Series.

Results - 3rd Leg Master Angler, Old Bawn May 11th

11 Anglers assembled in the Car Park at Old Bawn at silly o'clock on a Sunday morning. Hopes were high after recent reports from the area but as is so often the case "you should have been here yesterday!"

8am saw all manner of scratching traces lobbed into the gutter where amazingly weed was a problem after 5 days of predominantly westerly winds. Slow fishing was the order of the day although Chris (Snr) had a flattie very early on albeit just undersize. Chris (Jnr) as usual was picking up a few fish consistently enough but all around him on the high numbers guys were struggling to find the flats. Clive was also picking a few fish off outside the gutter and that became a trend where the fish were slighly further out than normal.

Apart from Clive getting a small smoothie at distance it never really got too exciting apart from Gordy finishing like the trawler he is to grab second place behind Chris, whose early progress had seen him in good stead. Clive was third and new member John Kane had a very creditable fourth.

The Master angler table is a very tight affair at the top with only 10 points between 1st & 9th place. Table is updated here

Longest Flat: Gordy "Please God give me a Cod" Hardman (Flounder 32cm)
Longest Round: Clive Ivory (Smoothie - 39cm)

1st-Chris (Jnr)--214pts
2nd-Gordy--------194pts
3rd-Clive--------167pts

Results - 2nd Leg Master Angler, Toberpatrick Feb 9th

A brilliant turnout of 16 anglers showed up for yesterdays Master Angler leg in Toberpatrick. The standard continues to rise in the club as several international anglers who have represented Ireland in the Home, European & World Championships took their place in the field (Conor Fuller was also there!)

Come three o'clock various flappers were sent into the gutter in search of flatties - maddie tails shooting through the air like fireworks! Certainly interesting to note along the beach how tackle is evolving over time (not for the better in my opinion), with quiver tips rods and smaller, more delicate presentation required to winkle out sub 20cm fish. Not the fault of the anglers, but rather the gross mismanagement of our fishstocks over several decades. How long before course match anglers begin to use sea anglers tactics as opposed to the other way around. (Apologies, that was a little more serious than usual!!)

Chris (Senior) started off like a dog from traps with two cracking flats in his first two casts, Alby & young Eric (who's actually now 26, married and has two kids) also got in on the act and found a few flats just inside the bank. Word was Chris Junior had caught a halibut sized flat on the end peg and had the pool sewn up! For the first 3 hours Eric & Alby continued to go fish for fish until darkness when Ricky went into another gear and continued to locate the flats while the rest of the field toiled. Paul Doyle & Clive began picking a few off but it was fairly immaterial as Eric had blasted away and had a super tally of 18 flats and 2 whiting to win comfortably. Paul got the better of Clive by a few points for second place to make up the podium.

Longest Flat: Chris Scanlon (Jnr) (Flounder/Halibut Hybrid 33cm)
Longest Round: John Hughes (Whiting 25cm)

1st-Eric----516pts
2nd-DeCock--299pts
3rd-Clive---277pts

A massive thank you also to Harry Catchpole for providing our Perpetual Master Angler Trophy. It's a beautiful glass sculpted fish on a branded ECR base. A very prestigious honour to get your name on that trophy! It was presented to our 2012 Master Angler Champion Clive Ivory by Club Treasurer Roger Buggy.

Teams for Daiwa Pairs

This year, as opposed to our usual fishing week in Kerry in the Autumn, we are looking at sampling the delights of the Daiwa pairs. It's only 3 pegged matches, so it pretty much is your weeks holiday with some added stress & pressure, and more drinking partners than usual! Take a look at the website to get full details - http://www.irishpairs.co.uk

Results - First 2013 MA Leg - Arklow 19/01/13

Brilliant Turn out for our first competition of the year on what I believe is the East Coast's most prolific beach. As usual, plenty of banter & slagging at check-in with our new Master Angler Trophy somehow continuing to reside on Rodger's mantlepiece instead of in the hands of 2012 Champion Clive Ivory!

The south easterlies of last Friday had coloured the water beautifully and with only scraps of weed to contend with, conditions were nigh on perfect. From the off, huge quatities of fish were being landed all along the match stretch, and some quality fish being brought ashore also with numerous whiting, dabs & flounder to mid 30 cms landed. Alby was flying on the high pegs picking off whiting and dabs at distance, while Rodger obviously liked the look of that trophy on the mantlepiece and he was "hockeying" fish on peg no 1! Our new members also weren't shy about getting amongst it, as Chris (Jr & Snr) & Paul were building big scores with doubles & trebles consistently. As darkness fell, the cock realised he had no batteries for his headlamp, I really hoped he would make use of the insulating tape I was offering to attach his Iphone to his forehead, but some good samartin unfortunately intervened with a headlight!

Funnily enough, the fishing became a bit patchy in Darkness but Chris Scanlan kept finding the fish and managed to overhaul Alby - 36 fish to 33. Paul kept going well also to finish with 30 fish. Every one else was in the twenties or teens and not a complaint coming off the beach from anyone, a great day out, but jesus it was cold!
A brilliant start from our new members, taking first & third in their opening Raiders comp, with Anthony & Chris Snr also well up there - Next Master Angler comp is Saturday Feb 9th on Toberpatrick fishing 3 - 8pm.

1st-Chris---959pts
2nd-Alby---867pts
3rd-Paul---756pts

Master Angler Results!

What a finish to the Master angler Season it was on Saturday as clive finished the season like a train to claim the Master Angler title for 2012 in his first year with the club, Well done that man. He's been ultra consistent all year and is a very deserving winner joining some of the illustrious names on the roll of honour. He will do us proud at the Masters in Munster next year.

Also finishing the season strongly, claiming the second master angler spot was Gordy "The Cod" Hardman. Again well deserved for his consistency throughout the year, adding the Last Man Standing title also this year.

The final comp of the year threw up horrible conditions for us, flat calm bright sunshine on the beautiful Port Beach in Louth. It was our first foray north of the liffey and it will not be the last as the long stretches of beach here can be prolific in the right conditions.

Flats were the order of the day, and despite the many claims "Maddies don't work up here", when the going is tough and it's difficult to winkle out a few fish, they often produce when little else will. clive won comfortable with 7 fish and a few more undersize, very impressive performance, Gordy had 4 and the Dodger had 3. john took the pool with a flat of 26cm and Dodger the jammy swine

Final Standings here

Longest Flat: John Hughes (Flounder 26cm)
Longest Round: Dodger (Drawn)

1st-Clive---172pts
2nd-Gordy---102pts
3rd-Roger---89pts

Lacken - Nightmare.

Terrible fishing on a beautiful day. Only 2 fish caught between 12 very competent anglers on a day when hundreds of peeler crabs were sacrificed for no good reason!

Clive did the business landing a nice 35cm flat halfway through & shortly after Mark Sinnot landed a 27cm flattie.

Embarrassment soon changed to cheering when Bootsy Kavanagh drew Alby out of the hat for the third place money.

It gives us a brilliant end to our Master Angler Competition Series, with the possibility of any 2 from 5 (Clive, Alby, Gordy, Shane or Fintan) taking the 2013 National Master Angler spots at Dunanny for our last MA Comp of the year.

Final Standings Longest Flat: Clive Ivory (Flounder 35cm)

Even a Blind Squirell finds a nut every now & then.....

After 6 years competitive angling, countless blanks, broken rods, reels, crack-offs & various disasters, Fintan "Bootsy" Kavanagh finally broke his duck & won a competition!

Flats were the order of the day and again in daylight there seemed to be a good few knocking about falling to most anglers along the beach. The fishing dried up as it got dark and once again Dogfish were conspicuous by their absence on The North Wexford beaches. Fintan had built a good lead early doors but when the whiting hoardes put in a showing late on, the whiting wrangler himself John Hughes started to catch frequently but it just wasnt to be as Bootsy was too well clear at that point!

As opposed to our usual few bob in the big fish pool, the prize was much better this time as Derek from Main Irish Angling (http://www.mainirishangling.com) had very kindly sponsored us a top of the range Akios Reel. Well when your luck is in, it's in, Fintan won the longest round with a 39cm tope aswell as the longest round with a 29cm flounder. His luck continued on our trip to Dingle but that's a story for another day! Well done Bootsy it's about time, no stopping you now boy!!!

Gordy got his revenge for loosing to Alby in the 2010 LMS as he took the 2012 title with a comfortable win on the night (the b*stard)!

Longest Flat: Fintan Kavanagh (Flounder 29cm)
Longest Round: Fintan Kavanagh (Tope 39cm)

East Coast Raiders SAC, 3 Man Team Open Results

A terrific turnout of 57 Anglers turned up for our open from as far as Kerry, Cork & Clare. Congratulations go to the winning team from Dublin Paul Tyndell, Stephen Glynn & Joe Canning with a superb combined score of 58 points. Second were the local experts Joe Byrne & Irish Captian Martin Howlin, along with Connaught's Mike Curtin with a very impressive 54 points. Third place was a very tight affair but the team of James Ryan, Joe Duggan & Paddy Barnwell just edged out Tony Behan, John Regan & David McNeill.

The fishing was consistent for those scratching and big bags of flounder were caught to the usual methods. In saying that, there was a number of quality fish taken with many good smoothounds, thornback ray, pup tope & dogfish coming from further out, although not in sufficient numbers to rattle the flounder bashers!

A big thanks to Andy Boyce of Shankill Angling Centre who very generously sponsored an Ian Golds Rod for the longest smoothhound which went to Alby Allan (94cm, 1st cast - GIFT!). Thanks also to the staff of the Orphan Girl for the use of their premises for check-in & prize giving.

Finally & most importantly a big thanks to all the anglers who supported the competition, there was a good buzz about it & great craic on the day. We have booked a similar date & tide for 2013 with The LPC and have a few ideas to make it bigger & better.

Photos below: Top Left - Joe Canning accepts the winners prize on behalf of Stephen & Paul. Top right - Martin Howlin accepts runners up prize on behalf of Joe & Mike. Bottom left Paddy Barnwell accepts third on behalf of Joe & James. Bottom right, Alby Allan with the longest smoothound.

Results: 4th Leg 2012 Master Angler - Flounder Soup

Brilliant fishing, bright sunshine, topless women....congratulations to the committee on choosing such wonderful venues!!!

In all seriousness though, over 150 counting fish caught (probably another 150 undersize) between 14 seniors and a junior in a daytime competition in the height of summer was excellent fishing. The high pegs were catching steadily from the off with Fintan landing a double counter first cast and many others picking up fish early doors as the previous days north easterly had coloured the water nicely before backing off giving us weed free conditions. A battle ensued on the higher numbers as Boyice & Alby were catching strongly throughout with Brendan & Gordy doing likewise at the other end. Rumors that Dennis had found a few dogs at distance didn't phase the scratching men as going away from fish in the gutter would have been a mistake.

SOD finished like a train, with 8 fish in the last hour, as did Dave Sherwood, Team Drummer was successful in targeting round fish for the pool, and a 32cm tope saw him win a tidy few quid for his efforts, Johnny Hughes spent most of the day "birdwatching" in the dunes as opposed to watching the sea and Dennis continued to argue that one dogfish should be worth the same as eleven flounders! Great day out, good craic and final shake-up is per below. The Master Angler Table is taking shape too, with any 2 from possibly 10 anglers still with a chance of qualifying for next years Masters in Munster. Latest table can be viewed Here

Results: 3rd Leg 2012 Master Angler - Loads of Fish & Rain

As usual Wicklow North produced the goods on a very wet night. From the off fish were continually being landed all along the stretch, the Beachbuddy-less Drummer was the first in with a double shot of dogs about five minutes in and the fishing continued to be this consistent virtually all night. Boycie back in the competetive fold was fairing well in the middle of the zone picking off decent whiting in twos and threes at distance on lug & fish, alhough being the proprieter of Shankill Angling Centre, one would have thought he would have a match measure in his tackle box!! This was solid East Coast fishing with numerous dogs & whiting aswell as some very decent plaice caught, the largest falling to Big fish specialist Gordy Hardman, a solid red-spot of 36cm. (A seal was also working the crease in front of us and was spotted with a few real dustbin lids of flatfish - plaice, flounders or dabs we wonder??)

The heavens opened at about 8pm and the continual rain was almost biblical at times, couple that with the rising tide swamping a few beach buddies made for the usual slagging to commence. All the time Brendan Canning was bagging up on Dogs at one end while Alby was doing very similar at the far end of the stretch. At eleven bells some very relieved rain sodden anglers trudged off the beach and myself & SOD had the unenviable task of adding big numbers of fish from wet scorecards! At the end of the day the top three anglers (Brendan, Alby & Boycie) had all amassed over 1,000 points which is a very impressive haul, and all three had caught over 30 sizeable fish each.

There was also the small matter of the Last Man Standing Quarter finals that saw the semi final draw line up shaping up as Alby V Drummer & Gordy V Dave Sherwood. Full Draw Here

Master Angler 2nd Leg - Results

The phrase "you can't keep a good man down" was very much in evidence yesterday as John Hughes came back from the ignomy of being the only "Blanker" on the Barrow Bridge to convincingly winning with a good catch of flounder, whiting & dogfish. Unfortunately the calm conditions allied to bright sunshine was to put the kiss of death on the fishing, a few flats were eeked out during daylight hours when most noticeably, Junior angler Conor Drumm managed to winkle out a bass!!

Due to the slow fishing, a game of rugby broke out on the beach at one stage but was sadly curtailed due to an injury sustained by Brock after a Sean O'Brien style tackle by Sod! Anyway, back to the fishing, and with the light fading the whiting hordes put in their expected appearance, however these were some of the pinist of pin whiting, bigger minnows have been used while trout fishing! Again, late on Ruairi put in a charge , pulling out a very valuable dab & doggie double, some consolation for breaking a rod earlier. Gordy (he incidentally has an 8% share in Facebook despite constant denials he knows what it is), who's fine run of form continues after figuring strongly in Kerry last week, also had a good finish just pipping travel companion Ruairi.

There was also the small matter of the Last Man Standing competition, where a few shock exits will make the headlines - such as Brock, SOD & Clive all falling at the first hurdle. Second round draw available here.

Dingle Trip - Sept 16th - 23rd 2012

A few club members have been making an annual trip to Kerry for the past number of years - great fishing, great craic & great scenery. This year we've picked a week with optimum tides, off peak accomodation rates & a few weeks prior to the daiwa pairs. This year we want to open this up to all club members (I can already hear Gordy saying he's going!). Accomodation for the week is only €90 per person sharing (www.dinglecottages.com), we've already got one house booked, but anyone else wishing to go pls let us know in the next couple of months. We might even run a comp on one of the famous surf beaches when we're down there!

Master Angler 1st Leg - Results

A cracking Wexford morning greeted the convoy of travelling anglers at the Barrow Bridge! The best of bait was being cast into the river to attract some of the quality (if not so numerous on the day) resident flounder. It started slowly enough with only Alby and Sod getting a decent flounder each at distance. As the tide began to pick up, more fish came to most anglers along the perfectly pegged stretch!

A complete lack of a pattern to the fishing made it frustrating for all, as no sooner as a fish or two been located to a specific bait, they were gone again, and that seemed to be the pattern all along the beach. Also, from speaking to all the anglers afterward, most fish were gently lip hooked, meaning they weren't hard on the feed or there was a lack of competition for the easy pickings?

Either way it was Shane who made the most in the tricky conditions, winning with 6 fish, Ruairi pulled a double of two quality flounder on his second last cast to secure him second and Alby pipped Bootsy Kavanagh for third by a single cm by the virtue of 4 large fish to Bootsies 5 infants! All in all a really enjoyable day, great craic and brilliant to see new faces in Clive, Drummer & Conor all getting into the mix and catching a few fish.

Longest Flat: Dave Sherwood (Flounder 37cm)
Longest Round: Sod (Cod 31cm)

1st-Sod--------198pts
2nd-Ruairi-----183pts
2nd-Alby-------130pts
Next Leg of the Master Angler is on March 10th in Kilgorman - It will also be the first leg of the 2012 Last Man Standing. Fingers crossed you wont draw one of these seasoned campaigners!

Christmas Fayre Comp 2012 Results

10 anglers turned up to fish the last comp of the year - The Christmas Fayre Turkey Shoot. With 8 prizes to be won, it truly would only be the turkeys who didn't secure the Christmas Feast!! As is the norm on Greystones South Beach, some poor fools were pegged on the pipe & as luck would have it Alby, Fintan & De Cock went about leeaving every rig they had in their box attached to it!! If a diver ever goes in there he will pick up 100's of impact leads! Meanwhile Gordy was flying like a greyhound from Traps woth a lovely 40cm+ codling early doors and a few other small cod too. Johnny Hughes was up to his usual tricks of bringing in trebles of sizeable whiting every cast, with the Dodger & Harry trying to keep up. Fintan was now out of rigs, I was blanking and John had caught the Irish Whiting Quota for 2012 but we battled on in pleasant conditions and once againb the beach threw up some decents sized specimens - Rockling to 36cm, a 30 cm Scorpion fish and a decent smattering of keeper codling & whiting.

In the final shake up, John had won well worth 39 fish on the card, Roger had over 30 & me had Fintan had 4 fish and a sewage pipe between us!! Anyway, well done to all the lads who won prizes, it'll be beans on toast in mine & bootsy's gaf on Christmas Day.

Congrats to Dennis who put in an incredible performance of 4 wins on the bounce in the middle of the year to secure his first ECRSAC MA Title. The last leg of this years MA was fished on killiney beach leaving Dennis only needing to beat the dreded blank to win the title. Fishing was good on the day with John huges winning with an incredible 53 fish! Gordy & Brendan also put upmassive scores in second & third place.

Big well done to the top 3 in our Master Angler also, and great to see so many guys turning up to fish the comps throughout the year, the craic was always mighty and there was some quality fish taken at time and as last weekend showed, serious quantity also!

6th Leg MA Results - Sept 3rd, Courtown (The procession continues)

Guest Reporter - The invincible Denis Brock - Fishing started of pretty well for most with plenty of tub gurnard been brought in on the first cast, harry catchpole had a fish within 3 mins un fortunately fishing slowed right down for most bar brendan and dave who decided to scratch at the fish while everyone else seemed to aim at dogs and smoothies, just as darkness came the noise of mr buggy could be heard all the way down the beach as he hooked into a nice hound of 80cms, (jammy fecker) , so out went the crab baits everywhere but the smoothies were not really there for most bar that dodger lad hooking another about 20 mins later , a nice 86 cms, at this stage i was just plodding along picking up singles every second cast or so ,dave sherwood was constantly hooking into fish in the surf, news was brendan was doing the same up his end, on my last three cast i had 2 dogs and a nice little ray of 55 cms to put me right up there,

5th Leg MA Results - August 27th, Enerielly South

Calm, mild conditions & calm seas greeted the 12 anglers for the latest leg of our MA series. Hopes were high of smoothhounds & dogfish hoardes on the rising tide into darkness, but the fishing was realtively slow with the odd flat & gurnard coming in for the first few couple of hours. Brendan & Gordy making the best of it with a few fish each. The Dodger had a 46cm huss to put a cat among the pigeons & the fishing picked up slightly into darkness. Big Wanger (spellcheck needed) Dennis again put his hours of practice & tuition on slaughterhill to good use with a Thornback and three high scoring dogs at range which put him in an unassailable position. Alby had a double thornie followed by dog to put the wind up Brock for a while but despite valiant efforts from Gordy & Brendan, Dennis held on for an impressive third win on the bounce!

Master Angler 3rd Leg Results, Ballinoulart 7th May

Beautiful sunshine, gentle sea roll & warm conditions greeted us on the beach for the 3rd leg of the Master Angler. Very positive reports of numbers of bass coupled with a few local rods pleasure fishing the beach when we arrived inspired confidence, and rightly so as along the stretch flats came in to regular scratching tactics early doors. No more so than Dave who had a double counter first cast but returned before measuring them for SOD on the next peg!! Catch & release gone nuts or simple mistake aside, t'was a lesson hard learned as we'll see!!

About an hour in, the sky darkened the wind completely changed direction from a gentle south westerly to a raging south easterly hail storm, kicking up a big sea, bringing weed on & generally making life difficult for all & sundry! At this point, normally we see our "Casters" exit stage left, home to clean their reels & watch videos of a 20 stone Belgian man swinging his rod! but not today. Dennis & Sod plugged on gamely and were both rewarded with bass, (2 for Brocker), meanwhile the jungle grapevine also informed me that Conor had a bass of 42cm & later John "Specimen Hunter" Hughes had a tidy bass of 47cm & flounder of 30cm which had him top of both pools. Old Man Dodger had a smoothhound at this stage but the size of which was a closely guarded secret!

The final shake-up was an extremely close affair with the bottom angler having 2 fish & winner just 5 with a stack of people on 4 fish. Unfortunately Dave's prematurely released fish had cost him a second place finish, although he did very well to add 4 subsequent counters onto his card. Dennis won the day out & is back on the fishing road yet again, Conor took second & Brendan third.

East Coast Raiders Go West!!

We had four lads travel across to Sligo to fish the second leg of the West Coast Shore League hosted by the Western Vikings SAC. Some sore heads were on the road early Saturday morning, supplemented by Gordy who was attending a wedding in Mayo (with an equally sore head!!).

The competition was brilliantly run by the lads on Trawee & Dunmoran Strand, 50 anglers turned out to fish & despite doom & gloom regarding the easterly wind, the fishing was solid enough with many decent turbot & flounder being landed on both beaches. Amazingly enough we even managed to crack the prize table with Alby taking a zone 2nd on Trawee & Fintan "Bootsy" Kavanagh winning the biggest round pool with an obviously confused mullet of 56cm! It was no surprise that top rod Mike Curtin took the overall honours with a 14 fish haul on Dunmoran & Sean Ivory also took a zone win. The welcome we received was second to none, coupled with the info we received on the venues & craic before, during & after the competition. We will certainly be back across to fish another this year & we look forward to returning the favour for the west coast lads during the Smoothie Season when it hots up.

2nd Leg 2011 Master Angler - Results

A great turnout of 15 anglers arrived to fish our second leg which co-incided with Ireland scuppering Englands Grandslam chances in Dublin. Unfortunately the fishing was once again poor, but hopefully the hungry period of the year is coming to a close & there will be more fish in our remaining competitions.

A brisk south westerly greeted us creating a lovely surf & the big tide filled the channel seemingly providing great conditions. First off the mark was Ruairi with a nice little flounder, but that didn't herald a flurry of fish. Alby got a double a while after and that put him top of the leaderboard for a good portion of the comp. Rumors began to circulate that Old Man Dodger had landed a 27lb Bass on a leg of lamb & mackeral cocktail (This later prooved to be a most welcome 45cm silver bar). Ruairi added a second fish as did Brendan with David landing a double aswell, prayers of "please God give me a cod" went unanswered for Gordy but he did have 2 flats to leave 5 anglers on 2 fish & Dodger with his bass meaning only 5 points seperated 2nd - 7th place. John had built up a handy lead with 3 fish including the 2 biggest flounders (30 & 25cm), that was enough to ensure he left with a fist full of dollars for the win & flat pool, but sssshhhhh, don't tell his Missus!!!

Longest Flat: John Hughes (Flounder 30cm)
Longest Round: Roger Buggy (Bass 45cm)

1st-John------99pts
2nd-David-----(Tied 54 pts)
2nd-Ruairi----(Tied 54 pts)

1st Leg 2011 Master Angler - Results

Unfortunately, The Met Office, Magic Seaweed & Windguru all got this wrong. As opposed to the calm conditions forecast, gale force south westerlies below accross the south easterly facing beach, making holding bottom difficult and insuring very few fish entered the gulley. Because of the wind & surf, it became impossible to fish at distance, meaning we would have to scratch away close in.

All the same, 15 of the 17 anglers bravely stuck to their task (we won't mention any names - Sod or Dennis), but it was new member, in his first competition, Robbie Jackson, who put in an impressive effort with 2 flounder to win the day. Robbie also holds a massive lead in the 2011 Master Angler, fair play that man!!!

Our next competition is on March 19th in Morriscastle, so hopefully with any luck the conditions will be more favourable, and we might all catch a fish or two!!

Longest Flat: Robbie Jackson (Flounder 25cm)
Longest Round: Brendan Canning (Drawn)

1st-Robbie----58pts
2nd-Alby------(Drawn)
3rd-Dennis----(Drawn)

Christmas Comp & AGM

10 Brave souls turned up to fish our Christmas Fayre & final leg of 2010 Master Angler competition. Flat calm conditions & a neap tide were not going to be favourable conditions, but all members caught a few fish, coalies, flounder & rockling being to the fore. Gordy was into an early lead picking off a few important counters early doors. A painfully slow couple of hours followed where only the odd fish was landed, before the last 90 minutes, when a few coalies showed up. Alby & Paul on pegs 9 & 10 made the best of that, fishing about 5 yards out on mackeral baits, they both added several fish in an hour which put both of them right up there in the Turkey Vouchers!! Gordy was not beaten yet though and on the last cast he pulled in a high scoring dogfish. In the end he was just pipped by Alby, who took his third MA Comp on the bounce! Conor finished 3rd, Mark 4th & Paul 5th, all seperated by an undersize fish or two! Brilliant also to see a few new members fishing with us, they didn't fair badly either with both Ruairi & Paul getting among the prizes! Congrats to Alby & John who will represent the club in the National Master Angler next October in Mullaghmore. Final placings here.

Master Angler 6th Leg. Courtown Beach, 11th September

Only 9 anglers turned out to our final autumn leg of the master angler, and I think it's fair to say, those who didn't will be kicking themselves!

First cast saw most people scratching in the coloured water close in, and the majority of anglers landed a flattie or two! Alby was firing his baits out at range and was sneakily building up a decent score with dogfish coming in most casts. With the onset of darkness the fishing became fantastic, Thornback Rays, Dogfish & Big Smoothounds being to the fore. Roger began to target the smoothie's specifically with big crab & rag baits and had 2 fine fish, very close to specimen weight. With the quality of fishing, one would have thought you were in Connemara as opposed to a beach venue on the east coast.

We also have an exciting finish to our 2010 Master Angler in Lacken on November 27th, where any 2 from the top 6 could realistically qualify to represent the club in the 2011 Irish Master Angler in Connaught.

Anyway, after the final shakeup, the results were:

Longest Flat: Eric Gasparro (Thornback Ray 67cm (Nose to tail))
Longest Round: Roger Buggy (Smoothhound 86cm)

1st-Alby------824pts
2nd-Eric------543pts
3rd-Brendan---509pts

Master Angler 5th Leg. Ballymoney Beach, 28th August

12 Anglers turned out to fish the 438 yard long beach (I measured it twice!!). A calm mild eveining had most people thinking smoothies, but as this was a comp, we were expecting the usual dribs & drabs.

Not to be the case thank goodness, as from the off a fair few flats came in along the stretch and I had a dog myself at distance. 30 minutes in there was a bit of excitement as Conor on the end peg was seen getting dragged up and down the beach by a nice smoothie! This got everyones dander up. Next in on the act was Alby who got a double smoothie at distance (80 & 82cms long), much to his delight! Brendan followed shortly after with a fine hound of 83cms. About 30 mins into dark, the dogs came on the feed at distance, and it was Tony, Mark & Alby who made the best of it, all landing several dogs before lines up.

A cracking comp with plenty of fish caught, species included - Smoothies, Dogs, Huss, Flounder, Plaice, Dab, Thornback Ray, Codling, Whiting & Gurnard.

Final Results were as follows:

Longest Flat: Fintan Kavanagh (Flounder 29cm)
Longest Round: Brendan Canning (Smoothhound 83cm)

Last Man Standing: Winner - Alby / Runner-Up - Gordy

1st-Alby------584pts
2nd-Mark------340pts
3rd-Tony------293pts
4th-Brendan---266pts

Arklow South Beach Results Feb 27th (Special Guest Reporter - Eric Gasparro)

At half 4, a slightly later start than anticipated due to a Dublin City SAC club comp beforehand we all set our sights for gold and lobbed our baits out into the sea. after a few minutes a strong rattle on my tip signaled the interest of a wanting fish and sure enough a few minutes later a lovely 22cm coalie came through the surf, a fish was great but a counter was even better.

After a few hours it was appearent that mini's were there in abundance and it wasnt long before i filled my 10 undersize fish limit. i did manage however to sneak a 21cm dab in before i did so going into darkness so i was in a strong position for a good finish. as night fell rumours of 4lb thornbacks and tony leading the way with 14 counters did their rounds around the beach, they were to prove unjustified thank god. i waded my way through the vast fields of undersize fish picking off the odd counting codling at range but it wasnt enough. i decided to play a bold tactic and fish no more than 30 yards out, i was soon duely rewarded with a counting double including my biggest fish of the night a 26cm codling.

with an hour to go a few of us were in the running with roger, myself, tony, alby and john all in the mix, the fish unfortunatley appeared to dry up, being even bolder this time i went after my favourite fish the flounder and tossed a flapper no more than 3-4 yards out, it paid off with a perfect little 20cm specimen and i got my counting fish total to ten.

at lines up it would appear that a thornback was indeed taken by new member Brendan, it wasnt 4lbs but it did measure 29cm and it was a pleasant febuary surprise i ever i saw one. the real downer of the night was when we got back to the cars to find alby's, pat's and roger's windows smashed by some mindless ejits. so if your heading to arklow at night be carefull

Final Results were as follows:

1st-Dimitry---352pts
2nd-Eric------309pts
3rd-Roger-----303pts
4th-Tony------285pts

First Comp 2010 - January 23rd - Ennerielly North Beach (The Harry & John Show!!!)

We were met with an absolutley cracking day at Ennerielly for the first leg of our Shore Master Angler for 2010. A brilliant turnout of 21 anglers took to the beach in bright sunshine on a still Wicklow afternoon.

Conditions were not great for big hauls of fish, but there was a few fish around the keep the cold away & anglers busy. Coalies, dabs, flounders, rockling, codling & whiting were as usual at this time of the year, the mainstay of the East Coast matchman.

It was great to see so many new members and a few guys trying their hand a competition fishing for the first time, and in many cases giving some seasoned anglers a good hiding in the process! (Fair play Kevin, Pat & Dimitry). It was John & Harry who stole the show in their first "Raiders" comp, finishing first & second. Cracking achievement lads, well done. Completing the prizes on the day, was Karl & Heffo, neither strangers to taking prizes during our comps. Longest round fish was Tony's 31cm Whiting & longest flat was Graham with a 32cm flounder.

Treble Counter - Well not exactly, Conor had cracked off the cast before and retrieved his rig with 3 "non-counting counters" on it!
